Boy’s life saved by dog
Stories of heroic animals are not entirely uncommon and they just go to show that our pets can be perhaps surprising companions who deserve much more credit than we give them.
In Omaha, Nebraska, a Labrador retriever lived up to his name when he jumped into the Platte River at the call of his owner, 12-year-old Tony Bailey. Bailey, who usually swims in the river near his home, suddenly found himself swept out by the strong current and unable to touch the bottom. Recent flooding had caused the river to rise and the current to become dangerously swift.
Jake, the Baileys’ four-year-old retriever, was the only one to hear Tony’s cries for help. Instinctively, he jumped into the river and swam to the boy, who had just gone under. When Tony came back up, he realized the dog was beside him and he grabbed Jake’s neck. The dog then pulled him ashore.
“You think you know your dog so well, but then he does something like this,” said Diane Bailey. “He’s got a big heart and he does have a brain in there.”
Indeed, Jake was not only intelligent but surprisingly strong enough to fight both the dangerous current and the weight of a 12-year-old boy. Credited with saving Tony’s life, Jake enjoyed a large bone as reward. Even better, his mischievous wrong-doings have been gratefully forgiven!
